Notes

  • This pattern is in US terminology only.

  • I use the yarn under/yarn over method, but you may use whichever method you prefer.

  • All decreases in this pattern use the invisible decrease method because the regular decrease may leave larger gaps in your work. I highly recommend using the invisible decrease method.

  • Using a different weight yarn may require you to make adjustments in certain places and cause issues with the face shaping - ex. crocheting the arms onto the body in rnd 14 may require adjustments.

Bulb Petals

Bulbasaur: Use Honey Bunny in color ‘Shamrock.’

Ivysaur: Use Honey Bunny in color ‘Candyfloss.’

Crochet in rows and make 4.

Ch 11 and start row 1 in the 2nd ch from hook.

Row 1: sc 10, ch 1, turn (10)

Row 2: inc, sc 8, inc, ch 1, turn (12)

Row 3: sc 12, ch 1, turn (12)

Row 4: inc, sc 11, ch 1, turn (13)

Row 5: inc, sc 12, ch 1, turn (14)

Row 6-12: sc 14, ch 1, turn (14) 7 ROWS

Row 13: dec, sc 12, ch 1, turn (13)

Row 14: dec, sc 11, ch 1, turn (12)

Row 15: dec, sc 10, ch 1, turn (11)

Row 16: dec, sc 9, ch 1, turn (10)

Row 17: dec, sc 8, ch 1, turn (9)

Row 18: dec, sc 7, ch 1, turn (8)

Row 19: dec, sc 6, ch 1, turn (7)

Row 20: dec, sc 5, ch 1, turn (6)

Row 21: dec, sc 2, dec, ch 1, turn (4)

Row 22: dec x2, ch 1, turn (2)

Row 23: dec (1)

Continue to crochet around the entire edge of the leaf. When you make your way back to the last st of row 23, make a slst and FO. Leave a long tail to securely weave in.

Leaves (Ivysaur Only)

Use Honey Bunny in color ‘Shamrock.’

Crochet into the front & back loops of the foundation ch to make an oval, and then continue to crochet in continuous rounds, until specified otherwise. Make 4.

TIP: For round 1, I crochet into the front and back loop of each chain. So, crochet into the 15 front loops, turn to the back loops, and crochet into all 15 back loops.

Ch 16, and start round 1 in 2nd ch from hook.

Round 1: (in the front loops of the ch: inc, sc 13, inc), turn to crochet into the back loops, (in the back loops of the ch: inc, sc 13, inc) (34)

Round 2: sc, inc, sc 13, (sc, inc) x2, sc 14, inc (38)

Round 3: sc, sc3inc, sc 14, (sc 2, inc) x2, sc 14, sc3inc, sc (44)

In Round 4, we will temporarily crochet into rows to make the leaf’s margin. You will need to use the following sequence of rows when you see the word ‘MARGIN.

MARGIN =

Ch 5, and start row 1 in 2nd ch from hook.

Row 1-2: sc 4, ch 1, turn (4) 2 ROWS

Row 3: sc 4 (4)

Round 4: sc 2, sc3inc, sc, (MARGIN, skip 3 sts, slst) x9, sc, sc3inc, sc 2 (48)

Make a slst and FO, leaving a long tail for sewing. You may want to use some scrap yarn to sew the gaps shut between each leaf margin (I don’t do this but it’s up to your personal preference).

Trunk (Ivysaur Only)

Start with Parfait Chunky in color ‘Almond Butter.’

Crochet in continuous rounds around the foundation ch.

Ch 30, leaving a long starting tail to sew with later, and start row 1 in the first ch st, creating a loop.

Round 1: sc 30 (30)

Change color from ‘Almond Butter,’ to ‘Shamrock.’

Round 2: (sc, ch 3) x29, sc (30)

FO, leaving a long enough tail to weave in.

Assembly

1. Cut out and embroider your felt eyes. For Ivysaur, you will want to use red, white, and black felt. For Bulbasaur, only use red and white felt. Using matching embroidery thread with an embroidery needle, sew the eyes together and then onto the face!

2. Sew the bottom of the (4) Bulb Petals onto the Bulb around rnd 4 of the Bulb.

3. Sew the top of the Bulb Petals onto the Bulb - where you sew these on depends if you’re crocheting Ivysaur or Bulbasuar. Sew them higher up for Bulbasaur and lower for Ivysaur.

4. (IVYSAUR ONLY - skip to step 5 for Bulbasaur) Sew the Trunk around rnd 4 of the Bulb.

5. Sew the Head onto the Body. Make sure this step hides the yarn tails from when we shaped the face! Add additional stuffing to the neck area to ensure there’s enough support to keep the head up.

6. Sew the Ears onto the Head from rnds 7-14. Make sure to stuff them prior to sewing them all the way on.

7. Sew the Thighs onto the Body so that they’re flush with the bottom of the body, ensuring he will sit correctly on a flat surface. Make sure to stuff them prior to sewing them all the way on.

8. Sew the Legs onto the Thighs & Body so that they’re flush with the bottom of the body, ensuring he will sit correctly on a flat surface. Make sure to stuff them prior to sewing them all the way on.

9. Sew the Bulb onto the back of the Body, ensuring it’s centered. For Bulbasaur’s Bulb you will need to use a separate strand of ‘Shamrock’ colored yarn. For Ivysaur’s Bulb, you will want to use your ‘Almond Butteryarn tail from the Trunk. Stuff the Trunk a little prior to sewing it all the way on.

10. (IVYSAUR ONLY - skip to step 11 for Bulbasaur) Sew the (4) Leaves around the edge of the Trunk.

11. Cut out a bunch (~14) of random shapes with felt (Dark Green for Bulbasaur, and Dark Teal for Ivysaur). Reference a photo of these characters while you cut these out for a more accurate depiction! Use matching embroidery thread and an embroidery needle to sew them onto the body!
