Teletubbies Mod
To make this you will need my Onion Sprite Pal Crochet Pattern.
This is NOT a full pattern, it only contains MODIFICATIONS to my pre-existing Onion Sprite Pal Crochet Pattern.
NOTES
This pattern uses US terminology only.
I use the yarn under/yarn over method, but you may use whichever method you prefer.
All decreases in this pattern use the invisible decrease method - the regular decrease method will leave larger gaps in your work. I highly recommend using the invisible decrease method.
If you are using Super Bulky 6 yarn like I did, and round 1 of the piece you‘re making is ‘mr 6’ in the original pattern, do the following instead to avoid a pointy tip: Skip rounds 1-2, make a mr with 12 sc, and continue onto round 3. This is what I did when making my Teletubbies following my original Onion Sprite Pal crochet pattern. Just refer to your mr as round 2 instead of round 1 when doing this so you can correctly reference the rows for placement purposes.
These instructions contain the steps on how to make ‘Po’ as far as materials go, but in some of my instructional photos, you will see I am making Tinky Winky! The only difference is that I used Bernat Blanket Brights yarn in the color ‘Pow Purple’ for the main body color. I also of course altered the shape of the head piece, but the method I used to make it was the same.
This pattern hasn’t been tested in any other weight of yarns!

Step 1: Crochet 2 Arms
Use Bernat Blanket in color ‘Crimson’ and a 5.5m hook. Crochet in continuous rounds.
Round 1: mr 8 (8)
Round 2: (sc, inc) x4 (12)
…
Do not color change.
Round 4: sc 5, bo, sc 6 (12)
Round 5: sc around (12)
…
Follow the same fastening off instructions in the pattern, but ignore the additional instructions that follow at the bottom of pg. 3, as it’s not necessary.
*note: you may need to make an extra sc before crocheting the arms shut so the bo (the finger) is directly on the side.
Step 2: Crochet Leg 1
Use Bernat Blanket in color ‘Crimson’ and a 5.5m hook. Crochet in continuous rounds.
Round 1: mr 12 (12)
Round 2: sc 4, inc x4, sc 4 (16)
Round 3: sc 4, inc x8, sc 4 (24)
Round 4: sc 6, dec x6, sc 6 (18)
Round 5: sc 3, dec x6, sc 3 (12)
Do not color change.
Round 6-7: sc around (12) 2 ROUNDS
Round 8: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Stuff the leg and FO, leaving a small tail to weave in.
*note: Mark the 14th st of rnd 8 with a stitch marker (the middle inside of the leg). This will be useful for later.
Step 3: Crochet Leg 2
Use Bernat Blanket in color ‘Crimson’ and a 5.5m hook. Crochet in continuous rounds.
Round 1: mr 12 (12)
Round 2: sc 4, inc x4, sc 4 (16)
Round 3: sc 4, inc x8, sc 4 (24)
Round 4: sc 6, dec x6, sc 6 (18)
Round 5: sc 3, dec x6, sc 3 (12)
Do not color change.
Round 6-7: sc around (12) 2 ROUNDS
Round 8: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Sc an additional 5 sc (to get the end of your round to land on the middle inside of the leg). Stuff the leg and DO NOT FO. Continue onto the next section where we will join the legs.
Step 4: Join The Legs & Crochet The Body
Continue using the same yarn tail from Leg 2, and crochet in continuous rounds.
Follow rnd 9 according to the pattern, however, insert your hook into the stitch on leg 1 that’s marked with the stitch marker (from step 2), instead of the first stitch of round 8.
Round 10: (sc, inc) x2, sc 28, (sc, inc) x4 (46)
Follow rnds 11-13 as normal, but your stitch count will be 46 instead of 40 for these rnds.
Round 14: (sc, dec) x2, sc 28, (sc, dec) x4 (40)
…
*note: when attaching the arms on rnd 23, ensure that the thumbs face outward towards the belly.
Follow the same fastening off instructions in the pattern, but ignore the additional instructions that follow at the bottom of pg. 5, as it’s not necessary.
Step 5: Crochet The Head
Use Chenille Home Slim in color ‘Seed Pearl’ and a 5.5mm hook. Crochet in continuous rounds.
…
Round 16: sc 24, inc x6, sc 24 (60)
Round 17: sc around (60)
Round 18: (sc 3, dec) x12 (48)
…
After rnd 22, stuff the head and add 18mm safety eyes about 9 sts apart, between rnds 15-16. Make sure they’re evenly spaced above/between the 6 nose increases in rnd 16.
…
Follow the same fastening off instructions and move on to the next step.
Step 6: Shape The Face
If you would like to add the black and white eye details at this stage using black and white worsted weight yarn, you may do so. Reference how I add the eye details at the bottom of pg. 6 if you’d like to add them. If you don’t want to, feel free to skip that portion of the pattern. I would, however, recommend you follow the steps below to shape the face, because it really gives it more of a Teletubby shaped face!
1. Using ‘Seed Pearl,’ and a long yarn needle, insert your needle into the bottom center of the head, and bring it out between rnds 15-16, 1 st away from the left eye.
2. Insert your needle back in-between rnds 15-16, 1 st away from the right eye, bringing it out of the bottom center of the head, just 1 st away from where you originally inserted your needle.
3. Pull both yarn tails tight to cinch the nose.
4. Tie a secure knot. This will affect the look of the bottom of the head, but it doesn’t matter because it will later be covered by the hood.
5. This is how the nose area will look after!
6. Now we will indent the eyes using White Worsted Weight Yarn. Insert your yarn and needle into the bottom center of the head, and bring it out at the very outer edge of the left eye between rnds 15-16.
7. Insert your needle back in-between rnds 15-16 at the very inner edge of the eye.
8. Bring your yarn needle back out of the bottom center of the head, 1 st away from where you originally inserted your needle.
9. Pull both ends of the yarn tails tight and tie a secure knot. This will indent the eye.
10. Do the same thing for the other eye and you will end up with a cutely shaped face!
Step 7: Crochet The Hood
Use Bernat Blanket in color ‘Crimson’ and a 5.5mm hook. Crochet in continuous rounds.
…
After rnd 22, slide the hood over the head to crochet rnd 23 while the hood is on the head. Doing it this way will ensure the hood opening doesn’t wind up to be too small to insert the head in afterwards.
Round 23: (sc 2, dec) x12 (36)
Make sure to hide the yarn tails from shaping the face in the inside of the hood. Follow the steps to secure the hood onto the head, as well as the steps to sew the head and body together. These instructions are detailed in the middle of pg. 7. The only difference is that the hood will wind up being 1-2 sts away from each eye.
*troubleshooting tips: If your hood winds up being too long, do less rounds of sc’s from rnds 12-21. For example, instead of making 10 rounds of sc’s from rounds 12-21, make 8 or 9 rounds of sc’s. Then continue the pattern as normal, keeping in mind you will have less rounds than the pattern calls for!
Step 8: Crochet 2 Inner Ears
Use Chenille Home Slim in color ‘Seed Pearl’ and a 5.5mm hook. Crochet in continuous rounds.
Round 1: mr 6 (6)
Round 2: inc x6 (12)
Round 3: (sc, inc) x6 (18)
Round 4: sc, inc, (sc 2, inc) x5, sc (24)
Round 5: sc 8, hdc, dc x6, hdc, sc 8 (24)
Make a faux sc to seamlessly end the round (slst will work too) and FO, leaving a small tail to weave in later. Set these pieces aside.
Step 9: Crochet 2 Outer Ears & Attach Inner Ears
Use Bernat Blanket in color ‘Crimson’ and a 5.5mm hook. Crochet and join a ch to begin crocheting in rounds.
Leaving a long tail, ch 18. Start rnd 1 in the 1st st of the ch, creating an open loop.
Round 1: (sc 2, inc) x6 (24)
Round 2: sc 8, hdc, dc x6, hdc, sc 8 (24)
Line up the inner ear with the outer ear so that the dc’s and hdc’s are aligned with each other. Begin rnd 3 by crocheting through both the inner ear and the outer ear.
Round 3: sc around (24)
Insert your hook into the next st as well as the last st of rnd 3, and make a slst. This will make the bottom of the ear pointier and help us sew in the next step. FO, leaving a long tail. No need to stuff.
Step 10: Sew The Ears Onto The Head
Sew the ears onto the sides of the head at a slight angle. Using the yarn tail from the starting ch, sew the 28 ch sts onto the head. After that, sew the other yarn tail from the end of rnd 3 into the head, making the ear appear pointier.
Step 11: Make & Attach The Head Piece
Use Bernat Blanket in color ‘Crimson’ and about 6” of 12 gauge wire.
Mold the wire into the shape you want for the headpiece, leaving about an inch or two of extra wire at the bottom.
Weave the bottom wire into the top-middle st of the hood and then wrap the wire around itself to secure it onto the hood. Start TIGHTLY wrapping your yarn around the wire.
Once the wire is completely covered, secure your yarn tails and tuck them into the hood/head.
Step 12: Crochet & Sew On The Belly Screen
Use Bernat Velvet in color ‘Vapor Gray’ and a 4mm hook. Crochet in rows, utilizing a turning chain at the end of each row - the turning chains don’t count as stitches in your rows.
Leaving a long tail, ch 13, and start row 1 in the second ch from hook.
Row 1-5: sc 12, ch 1, turn (12) 5 ROWS
Row 6: sc 12 (12)
Sc around the edge of the entire piece, making 3 sc’s in each corner st. Once that’s done, make a slst and FO, leaving a long tail. Now, sew the back loops of the screen onto the belly from rnds 13-17. I find that only sewing the back loops on makes the shape look better/cleaner.
